After art school, Stuart Leslie Goddard got keen on rock music and changed his name to Adam Ant. By 1977 his band was popular in punk-torn England, and Ant's self-named antmusic made him a local idol. His fancy dress and distinctive white stripe of face paint became his signature. After that had run its course, he refashioned himself as a mainstream singer. Once it seemed that his musical career had evaporated, he made an unexpected comeback in the early '90s as an adult alternative artist.
